Northeastern Michigan offers excellent opportunities for hiking enthusiasts. Numerous trail systems have been developed and maintained for your enjoyment. Experience the diverse landscapes, the grandeur of Northern hardwood and pines forests, and the splendor of countless streams, waterfalls and lakes while hiking the marked and unmarked trails of Northeastern Michigan. Please help protect our beautiful outdoors by taking nothing but pictures and leaving nothing but foot prints.

Hiking Trails

Aspen Park [Biking & Hiking Trails], Commerce Blvd, Gaylord, MI 49735, Phone: (989) 732-4060. Located just blocks from downton Gaylord, the park offers many different paths to enjoy your quiet sport of choice or benches to sit and enjoy the view. If mountain biking is more to your liking then that too can be done in Aspen Park on one of the "dirt" trails developed in cooperation with the Northern Mid-Michigan Chapter of Michigan Mountain Biking Association. Featuring 100 acres of woods, paved and unpaved trails, tennis courts and some of the best scenery in Northern Michigan. Aspen Park is a year-round park! During the winter you can enjoy the groomed cross country ski trails or set off on a pair of snowshoes to enjoy the beautiful winter scenes.

Black Mountain Pathway [Biking, Hiking, Horse and Ski Trail], County Road 489, Onaway, MI 49765, Phone: (989) 785-4251. 30 mile groomed double-tracked cross-country ski, hike, bike and horseback trail. A separate six-mile skating lane meanders around the lower portion of the mountain. Well maintained. Parking lot, toilet and informal bulletin board with maps. Nearby Black Lake and Twin Lakes Campgrounds.

Clear Lake/Jackson Lake Pathway, 10 miles N of Atlanta on M-33, Atlanta, MI 49709, Phone: (989) 785-4251.  7.5 mile hiking and biking trail.

Green Pine Lake Pathway [Biking & Hiking Trail], 14 miles NW of Clare on M-115, Clare, MI 48617, Phone: (989) 426-9205. 8.5 mile trail suitable for biking and hiking.

High Country Pathway - 9 miles north of Atlanta - 70 miles.  The pathway is a 70 mile loop extended eastward from the heart of the Pigeon River Country in Otsego County into the Atlanta State Forest in Montmorency County and northwards up into southwest Presque Isle County and southern Cheboygan County through the heart of Michigan's northern Lower Peninsula. It is designed to provide the more enthusiastic backpacker with about one week of high quality outdoor adventure - Michigan style! Atlanta

Hanson Hills Recreation Area [Biking, Hiking & Ski Trails, Ice Skating] 7601 Old Lake Road, PO Box 361, Grayling, MI 49738, Phone: (989) 348-9266.  Home of the Michigan Cup Marathon and the Hanson Hills Challenge Races. A complete 1000 acre winter/summer sports park. Family recreation at reasonable rates. Terrain Park, 11 downhill skiing runs, 35 km cross-country skiing, ice skating, tubing, biking, fishing, softball field, hiking & walking trails, rental facilities. Indoor Skate Park with 6 ft roller, quarter pipes, grind rails, fun boxes & more.

Herman Vogler Conservation Area [Hiking & Ski Trails], Off US 23 on Birchwood Drive, Rogers City, MI 49779, Phone: (989) 734-4000. The HVCA contains more than seven miles of trails, all used by hikers, cross-country skiers, hunters and nature lovers. Four main trails run along Trout River and are beginner, moderate and challenging. The trail system traces a path through a constantly changing blend of habitats that range from hardwood highlands to cedar thickets and marshes.

Hoist Lake Area - 23 miles west of Harrisville - distances vary.  Series of loop from 3 to 15 miles.  Trailhead off M-65 one mile south of M-72.  Parking.  Wilderness area includes pot hole lakes, marshes and forests.  Camping.  Curran, Glennnie & Harrisville

Huron Sunrise Trail [Biking & Hiking Trail], 292 S. Bradley Hwy, Rogers City C of C, Rogers City, MI 49779, Phone: (989) 734-2535. Stretching 10-miles north along Lake Huron from Rogers City, the Huron-Sunrise Trail is one of northern Michigan’s most beautiful. Built by the City of Rogers City, the all-asphalt trail ends in Hoeft State Park with plans for a two-mile extension to Forty Mile Point to the northwest. To the southeast, the long-term goal is to find a way through the Michigan Limestone Operations quarry to a railroad right of way called the Rogers City Spur and a link to the Alpena to Mackinaw City Trail. The Huron Sunrise Trail has many amenities in town and in the state park. On the north side of town is the Vogler Conservation Area, a 270 acre forested property that also includes seven additional miles of trails mostly for hiking or mountain biking.

Mason Tract Pathway [Hiking & Ski Trails], M-72 and Chase Bridge Road
AuSable State Forest,
Grayling, MI 49738, Phone: (989) 348-6371. 11.5 mile groomed ski, hike trail. Non-motorized area on the South Branch of the AuSable River. 15 miles east of Grayling. Ranging in length from 2 7/10 mi. to 11 3/10 mi. Recommended to ski or hike with a buddy... some sections of this trail are a considerable distance from the nearest plowed road. Very scenic, remote, quiet area! Near Canoe Harbor State Forest Campground.

Michigan Shore-to-Shore Riding & Hiking Trail - Au Sable -220 miles.  Trail stretches west from Au Sable on Lake Huron to Empire on Lake Michigan.  Used by hikers and horse riders.  Easy, scenic hike through river valleys, meadows and forests.  Marked pathway varies from forest trail to paved roads.  Frequent campgrounds.  Northern spur from Grayling to Elk Hill.  Southern spur from Mayfield to Cadillac.  For further information contact Michigan Trail Riders Association, 1650 Ormond Rd., Highland, MI 480301  Au Sable & Empire

Negwegon State Park [Hiking Trails], Sandhill Road, Black River, MI 48721, Phone: (989) 724-5126.  Negwegon State Park is a rustic, undeveloped area open for hunting and hiking. The terrain is a mixture of low land areas, with small ridges, to mature pine forest, with some hardwoods and aspen forest, with some pockets of open meadows mixed in.

Norway Ridge Pathway [Bike, Hike & Ski Trail], Werth Road, Mackinaw State Forest, Alpena, MI 49707, Phone: (989) 785-4251. Seven mile groomed ski, hike and bike trail. One trail with three groomed and marked loops for novice and intermediate x-country skiers. Parking and toilet available.

Ocqueoc Falls Bicentennial Pathway [Biking, Hiking & Ski Trails], Mackinaw State Forest, M-68, Millersburg, MI 49759, Phone: (989) 785-4251 - 11.5 miles west of Rogers City - 6.5 miles.  1 - 6 miles, groomed ski, 3 loops, hike, bike trails. Three trails of Greek skiing next to the largest falls in the lower part of Michigan, modern to challenging trails. Trailhead located at Ocqueoc Falls State Forest Campground.  Cheboygan & Rogers City

Ogemaw Hills Pathway - Trailhead on Fairview Road, Au Sable State Forest.  13.6 mile, groomed ski, hike, bike trail. Provides a quiet peaceful setting for a scenic walk through nature on beautiful wooded pathways. With plentiful displays of foliage and wildlife from Spring through Fall. Novice, intermediate or advanced x-country skiing.  West Branch & Rose City

Pine Baron Pathway [Biking, Hiking & Ski Trail], 5 miles SW of Gaylord, Mackinaw State Forest, Gaylord, MI 49735, Phone: (989) 732-3541.  8.75 (14km) mile groomed ski, hike, bike trail. Has nice scenery with woods to decrease the wind chill. This novice trail is nearly flat on all but the "Whopping Loop" which has some small hills.

Red Pine Natural Area Pathway, AuSable State Forest, F-97 & Sunset Road
Saint Helen, MI 48656, Phone: (989) 275-4622.  1.5 mile hike, bike, interpretive foot trail.

Reid Lake Foot Travel Area [Hiking & Cross-county Skiing], Hwy M-72 & Kohler Road, Barton City, MI 48705, Phone: (989) 739-0728 - 18 miles west of Harrisville on M-72.  A back-country recreation experience within a working forest environment. Once part of a northern Michigan farm, this 3,000 acre tract includes forested uplands, swamp hardwoods, beaver impoundments, marsh and open lake areas. Wildlife abounds including deer, turkey, beaver, birds and fish. Six miles of gently rolling trail will lead you around Reid Lake. Can be used for skiing in winter. Southeast corner of area is a research natural area.

Shingle Mill Pathway - 10 miles - Vanderbilt - 11 miles.  Marked loops from 6 to 11 miles long.  Trailhead at Pigeon River Forest Campground.  Trail circles Pigeon River, passing woodland, swamps and lakes.  Campgrounds.  Joins North Country Pathway.  Vanderbuilt

Sinkhole Pathway [Biking & Hiking Trail], Mackinaw State Forest, M-33 & Tomahawk Lake Hwy, Onaway, MI 49765, Phone: (989) 785-4251 1.5 miles.  Features include five sinkholes, formed when underground caves collapsed.  Trailhead and parking at Shoepac Lake Forest Campground marked with blue blazes.  Joins High Country Pathway.

Thompson's Harbor State Park - Situated along seven and a half miles of rugged Lake Huron shoreline, this undeveloped 5000 acre park provides a rustic retreat for hikers exploring the park's six miles of trails. Most of the beach is limestone cobble. Three marked, easy, ungroomed trails running in the woods and along Lake Huron. Peaceful and quiet setting. The park is adjacent to the Presque Isle harbor.  Rogers City

Tisdale Triangle Pathway [Biking, Hiking & Ski Trail], M-18 & Tisdale Road, AuSable State Forest, Roscommon, MI 48653, Phone: (989) 275-4622.  10.1 miles, groomed ski, hike, bike trail. The trail has multiple loops all of which are relatively flat terrain.

Wakely Lake Foot Travel Area [Biking, Hiking & Ski Trails], M-72 West, Huron-Mainstee National Forest, Grayling, MI 49738, Phone: (989) 826-3252.  A federally owned special area designed for the protection and restoration of the population of threatened loons and eagles. Vegetation varies from tag alder and conifer swamps to upland jack pine, white pine and oak. Fishing is catch and release only to maintain food supply for loons. Walk-in access and camping. With an extensive network of trails, it is a scenic, non-motorized area. Hiking, biking & ungroomed cross-country ski trails range in length from 4 1/2 miles to 7 miles. Loon nesting area closed to public from March 1 to July 1.
