Indian River is an unincorporated community located in Tuscarora Township in Cheboygan County. This town was founded by Floyd E. Martin, who purchased land and moved here in 1878. Strategically located between Burt and Mullet Lakes, it was ideal location for gathering and distributing lumber cut from the surrounding forest. A post office was established in 1879. The Michigan Central Railroad established a station here. Indian River has many diverse businesses, shops , resorts and restaurants making it a popular tourist destination. The river and lakes are popular fishing locations and attract boaters from all over the country. The largest crucifix in Michigan can be seen just south of town. Indian Township Population: 2,297. This part of Tuscarora Township was first settled in 1876 by David Smith, Jackson Corey, S. P. Hayes, M. A. McHenry and John B. Clark. The village was founded by Floyd E. Martin who bought land here in 1878, had it surveyed in 1879 and recorded in 1880. Named after the river which runs through it.
